In January 2014, the University of California (UC) systems went 100% smoke and tobacco-free, including e-cigarettes. Later, in April 2017, the California State University (CSU) system also adopted a 100% smoke and tobacco-free policy that includes e-cigarettes.

In May 2018, the Board of Governors for the California Community College system adopted a resolution to provide guidance and support for all 114 California community colleges to adopt and implement 100% smoke and tobacco-free policies. Currently 52% of California Community Colleges are 100%smoke or tobacco-free

Compadres for Tobacco-Free Los Angeles County is helping community colleges and trade/vocational schools adopt and implement a smoke-free policy that prohibits smoking including the use of electronic smoking devices (ENDs).
