Fresh Air At Rio (FAAR) Student Coalition

The Fresh Air At Rio (FAAR) student coalition began in 2019 as a group of active students from Rio Hondo College gathered together to advocate for a fresh air campus policy. Students participate in various on-campus events to educate fellow classmates, staff, and faculty on the dangerous consequences of using tobacco products, collect data on the use of tobacco products on campus by collecting public opinion surveys and participate in cigarette butt clean-up events. They also conduct presentations at various campus club meetings and associated student government meetings.

Why is this important?

All UC and CSU campuses have 100% Tobacco-free campus policies including the use of electronic cigarettes. Currently only 60% of California community colleges have a 100% smoke or tobacco free policy. Rio Hondo's current policy allows smoking on campus only in designated smoking areas. Rio Hondo is located on a hill surrounded by brush areas that can be potential fire hazards for campus grounds to catch on fire if a cigarette is not put out correctly.

The FAAR students are advocating for a fresh and clean campus environment for all students to enjoy.
